Paying off a Mortgage

A while ago we had a discussion on paying off a mortgage early.  Here is an interesting article from Charles Schwab that explores the pros and cons:

Should You Pay Off Your Mortgage Early, Before You Retire? (schwab.com)

As I said, to me it doesn’t make sense to pay off a mortgage charging 2 or 3% with funds that could be earning much more than that.  And the federal government will subsidize about 20-30% of the interest.   Also, many high worth individuals have mortgages, so maybe they know something.  But there is that peace of mind of being absolutely debt-free offers.  I can understand both sides of the argument, so the choice is yours.

  1. I taught the Dave Ramsey program in the past. Am a fan of paying off that mortgage as soon as it is feasible. Many (most?) people don’t have the discipline to realize the full opportunity cost of alternately investing the money. The reduction in your monthly living expenses gives you additional life flexibility as well.
